Let’s Talk Climate Change in 2019

Climate change has been always been an issue, and it is progressively getting worse. I know, I know. This is a topic of much controversy, and I usually try to stay away from topics such as this, but it can no longer be avoided. We have to do something about it for our sake and for the sake of the generations who will be here long after we’re gone. The same way that we clean and care for our house is the same way that we should be treating the environment. Remember, the Earth is our home too. In this blog, I am going to outline some of the changes that our planet is currently going through as a result of climate change, and I am going to give you tips and ideas for how to do your part to help.

What’s going on in the world?

  • Sea turtles and other aquatic animals are facing greater dangers than ever before. According to NASA, oceans have been experiencing an increase in temperature and rising sea levels, which changes the current of the ocean. This means that some animals are migrating to different parts of the sea, thus, introducing sea turtles and other at-risk animals to new predators. I believe that this is the reason for the increase in shark attacks this year. Think about it, in North Carolina, there were three shark attacks in June 2019. North Carolina typically sees about one to three shark attacks per year, and there has already been three in one month (Boston News). In the beginning of August, there were three shark attacks in just 24 hours (CNN). It seems that the sharks are moving closer to the shore in search of food because the increase in water temperature has changed the migration pattern of most of the fish and seals that the sharks eat.

  • Snow storms in the summer. Yes, you read that correctly. On June 21, Colorado got nearly 2 feet of snow, making its mark on the first day of summer. CNN reports that the last time Colorado saw any amount of snow this late was in 1928. Furthermore, according to CBS News, a city in Mexico saw a hail storm that left them in almost 6 feet of ice on June 30. After the ice melted, the city was at risk of  flooded streets, leaving the city and its people in more danger.

  • Increase in temperature can affect human health. CNN suggests that an increase in temperature can cause wildfires and pollution, thus impacting our mental and physical health. As a result, we are increasing our risk of experiencing anxiety, PTSD, depression, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory diseases. Honestly, I had no idea that extreme weather could worsen our mental health, but that’s all the more reason why we need to do something about this and fast.

What can we do?

  • Recycle at work and at home! If your job or apartment doesn’t offer a way to recycle, talk to your waste hauler or your rental office to see about adding it. One phone call can lead to a major change, especially if you have a large office or apartment complex. If you do have a way to recycle, then make sure you do it! Do your research so that you’ll know what is recyclable and what is not.

  • Use less water, especially hot water. Take shorter showers, turn the sink off while brushing your teeth, and wash your clothes in warm or cold water. It requires a lot of energy to pump water, and it requires even more to heat it up. The less water you use, the more energy you’re saving!
  • Try planting flowers, fruits, vegetables, and trees. If you read my last blog, you know how much I love gardening. It has so many benefits, and saving the environment is one of them! Not only do plants give us oxygen, but growing your own food can reduce pollution! That’s one less trip to the grocery store because you forgot to pick up tomatoes last week. Now, you can walk to your own backyard and pick your own fruit!
  • Walk and bike more! If you need to run to the grocery store and it’s less than a 10 minute walk from your house, choose to walk or ride your bike instead of getting in your car. You’ll get some good exercise in while also saving the environment!

We can help save our planet — we just just have to do it together. Vow with me that you’ll make at least one change to help conserve energy or reduce waste. If everyone who reads this commits to making one change, we can increase our chances of living in a better world.

“The most important thing about global warming is this. Whether humans are responsible for the bulk of climate change is going to be left to the scientists, but it’s all of our responsibility to leave this planet in better shape for the future generations than we found it.” – Mike Huckabee

  1. Wow, you have just enhanced my knowledge about global warming. I vow to do my part.

    Thank you

    1. Thank you so much for reading and vowing to help. It’s imperative that each person does at least one thing to help! 🙂

    1. These are great tips, and it’s such an important issue. Thank you for shedding some additional light on climate change.

    2. Definitely! It’s not too late, so I’m trying to get as many people as I can to take action asap! Thanks for reading 🙂

    1. Thanks for reading. We have to take care of our home for ourselves and the generations that will be here long after we are gone.

    1. I’m currently trying to grown spearmint, and it requires soo much patience. Start small and work your way up!

    1. Definitely! It’s a hard thing to admit — that the world is suffering because we didn’t care enough to collectively save it — but we have to take responsibility for it and do something about it!

  2. This is so true. A lot of sea animals are having a hard time, that’s why I partnered with wild life organization and focused on sea animals! Thank you for sharing!

    1. I’ve watched so many documentaries about how oceanic life is suffering as a result of our careless actions. Thank you for making a commitment to help them!

    1. Thank you. I was hesitant at first because climate change is a controversial topic, but it’s hard not to talk about it when all of these crazy stories are coming up in the news.

  3. It is so important to start the change within ourselves..let us be responsible and don’t litter, stop burning plastics and plant more trees.

    1. Right! I just read an article a few weeks ago that Ethiopia planted over 300 million trees in just 12 hours. We should definitely be doing more!

  4. Every night before going to bed I check out Google Discovery articles. Every time, there’s at least one new article about climate change, and most of the times it’s about Iceland. It’s incredible how badly affected Iceland is 🙁

    1. It’s really bad. I can’t help but think about how all of this will affect our future generations. 🙁

    1. Saving the environment isn’t at the top of everyone’s to-do list, unfortunately. We don’t often think about how harmful our actions and ways of living can be. Thanks for reading!

  5. It definitely seems tragic that animals are being affected by so much change in the climate. The sad part is whether you believe in Climate change or Not…how hard is it to just do simple little things that can only help the environment. It wont kill anyone to try to recycle or reduce extra wasted parts on products. In fact not only will it help the environment but it may even help us save money on said product while protecting ourselves and our children of other diseases.

    1. Exactly– we just have to do our part individually so that we can collectively save our planet. Thank you for reading!

  6. we should join and act even in the tiniest way the campaign on climate change such as zero plastic use and patronize cleaner fuel to save our world.
